Dr. Frances Slater was invited to present results from the 'To Chlorinate, Or Not To Chlorinate' project at the STEM for Britain Engineering poster final at the Houses of Parliament.
Members of Parliament were in attendance, including Abtisam Mohamed (pictured) MP for Sheffield Central.
Dr. Frances Slater presented research on 'Residual-chlorine concentration impacts the ecology of biofilms in drinking water pipes and their water quality response'.
Dr. Katherine Fish was an invited plenary speaker and discussion panelist at the Gordon Research Conference "Water disinfection, by-products and health" 30th July – 4th August 2023 at Mount Holyoke College (MA, USA) . This conference series is known for inviting speakers at the forefront of their field and providing a forum to instigate debate at the frontier of biological, chemical, physical and engineering sciences and their interfaces.
Awards and Recognition
In April 2023, Dr Umer Zeeshan Ijaz has taken up his role as a Speciality Chief Editor (Integrative Systems Microbiology) at Frontiers in Systems Biology, a newly launched journal.
Umer Zeeshan Ijaz and Isabel Douterelo Soler co-hosted Maria Soledad Martinez Martinez at Universities of Glasgow and Shiefield, respectively. She is working on microbiome analytics for her PhD project entitled Exploring Microbiome Dynamics in Secondary Drinking Water Systems: assessing its influence on Water Quality from a "One Health" approach where both Umer Zeeshan Ijaz and Isabel Douterelo Soler are co-supervisors. Umer Zeeshan Ijaz provided training on analytical strategies related to 16S rRNA and shotgun metagenomics based microbial community surveys.
